The Municipality
of San Pedro de Zacapa is located about 15km from Pito Solo
and the main highway between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula,
and 40km from the city of Santa Barbara. It sits off the main
paved road about 4km on a dirt road. The overall population
of the municipality is around 11,000 with fewer than 2000
living in the urban center of Zacapa.
Situated
in Western Honduras
The weather
is warm all year round and the municipality sits at around
500 meters above sea level. Locals produce corn and beans,
raise cattle and vegetables. The town has electricity and
a public phone at the Hondutel office. There is also cell
phone reception amd HonduTel has plans to install phones throughout
the urban areas in June 2004..
There
is a health center, a few private clinics, a farmacy and three
large educational institutiones. In
adition there are several cooperativos and some craft groups
and workshops.

The climate
in Zacapa is mostly temporate, often sunny and dry during
the summer months and cooler during the Honduran rainy season.
Zacapa often wakes to a veil of cool fog that clings to the
mountainsides. The average temperature is 30°C (86°F).

Although
there are isolated cases of maleria during the rainy season
it is not a common affliction. See health.
Zacapa was the first municipality in Honduras to boast the
complete eradication of dengue fever. Violent crime in Zacapa
is almost non-existant and you will find the people friendly,
charming and hospitable.
It's
natural resources are clean and well maintained. Despite it's
stunning beauty and proximity to the Santa
Barbara National Park and Lake
Yojoa, Zacapa remains an undiscovered jewel nestled away
in a quiet part of Western Honduras and has avoided the ugly
and overdeveloped tourist infrastructure common in other Central
American countries.
