Wood

The municipality has numerous woodworking shops, like those of Napoleón Acosta (President of the Municipal Artisan Committee), that attract numerous talented artisans where they are afforded the opportunity to express their creativity.

Independent artisans, like Silverio Domínguez, take their inspiration from Zacapa’s nature and transform it into a work of art. He uses a root is used called “cuculmeca" which he carves with a kitchen knife.
Simplicity is what gives rustic furniture its beauty and other woodwork by José Sagastume. He creatively uses the shapes in nature to produce his unique work.

Tule

In the indigenous Lenca community of Canculuncos, women still work with tule (palnt fiber) to make mats, part of the heritage of this beautiful town.

Recycled Crafts

Knowing the great need to recycle, the woman of Azacualpa create purses and wallets out of recycled snack bags. While reducing the amount of trash through recycling, they have created a very original craft.

Bread Making


Baking homemade bread is an old custom in Zacapa. It is a tradition that is most utilized in the month of December, several woman like Luz Osorto Mejía, continue baking year round. This insures that the community continues to have delicious bread to accompany their coffee.
